Hyperrealism Part 3
B1. Machine Riot
B2. Stained

Steve Stoll is one of techno music's greats. Starting out originally as a drummer in industrial band Wax Trax, it was no coincidence that he later became one of the masters of drum heavy techno. Steve epitomised the raw minimal sound of '90s New York, through a near endless line of releases on labels including Trax Records, Novamute, Music Man, Djax-Up-Beats, Richie Hawtin's Probe, and of course his own aptly named Proper (which later spawned the 212 Productions imprint). He also formed collaborations with Damon Wild (as Voyager 8), Ken Ishii (as Kjoh Zon) and Pete Namlook (as Hemisphere).

Outside of producing techno and playing live sets, Steve has been busy working with Front 242's Patrick Codenys (a new Gaiden album is soon expected from the pair), writing loop packs for Ableton, designing his own synth modules and fx pedals… and that's just the half of it. He recently appeared on Detroit's ASRX, anchoring two fine 12"s, with this new release on Earwiggle being his first full solo 12" in over five years. Following on from Steve's famous saw shaped vinyl series that delivered 'Hyperrealism Parts 1 & 2' in 1995, Part 3 has now arrived, except this time on superior round shaped wax!

'Hyperrealism Part 3' marks a timely update of the harder New York techno sound. A grinding analogue bassline is tweaked to perfection throughout this monstrous peak-time track that once again displays Steve's sonic astuteness in making a seemingly minimal, straight ahead groove become something far more powerful and dynamic. One for big rooms and underground spaces everywhere.

'Machine Riot' is literally just that. It's a riotous machine led adventure, with a raucous lead (his vintage Buchla synth is all over this record) and extra sturdy 909s underplayed by subtle but effective, interchanging loops. A magical slice of strobe-lit, heads-down techno; you know things are kicking off in the place when this gets played.

'Stained' rounds off the ep in a more experimental vein. Reminiscent in part to Nine Inch Nails, this is a fine example of Steve's superlative sound design - mixing bit crushed broken drums with soaring choral atmospherics, to deadly effect. A stylish end to one of 2011's most proper techno records.

Smear dj set @ Earwiggle (25.2.11)

Strong armed British techno has enjoyed a resurgence over the last few years, and playing his part in that is Scottish dj/producer <a http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifhref="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/smear">Smear. '地獄’is a straight hitting acid/hoover attack that descends into all sorts of chaos - reminiscent of the power of Polygon Window coupled with the madness of Spiral Tribe; this is a track that quickly brings things into disrepute.

On the b-side 'Menace 808' revisits the electro/breakbeat rave sound with all sorts of twists and turns that eventually drops into a pure unashamed hands in the air breakdown. One for the fields and festivals this summer? You know it is. Closing with the pacy, glitched up breaks of 'Talon', anodyne proves once again that when it comes to haunting yet majestically uplifting dancefloor music, there are few better in the game.

Perc Interview

One of the few producers around who can claim to be putting a fresh stamp on the techno genre is London producer and label owner Ali Wells aka Perc. A gradual shift into the depths of underground techno has led to his position as one of the very best in the game; a producer with a relentless work rate and mammoth discography to match. Ahead of his live appearance in Dublin this Friday, Ali took a few moments away from putting the final touches to his debut album to kindly answer some questions we put his way…

How long have you been producing, and what inspired you to start originally?

I started at the age of 16 and I bought my first drum machine (Roland TR626) the day I got my GSCE results, so it's been a while. At that age I had been in bands for a few years but was starting to realise that a group dynamic was not really for me. Electronic music was creeping into my life and the more I read about the DIY/home studio methods of producers the more I wanted to get involved.

You have released music on such a large amount of labels. With a lot of commitments to releases/remixes etc. do you have to limit the time you spend on each track?

No, by putting in long hours I can work on something until I am happy with it. When I rush, due to a deadline from myself or a label, then I am rarely happy with the results. I spend a lot of time in the studio, maybe 40-50 hours in an average week, some tracks and remixes come together in a few hours, whilst others have been tweaked on and off for up to a year. Every track is different but I know when one is ready to face the outside world.

You've taken an interesting route over the last number of years to where you are now. In a way you've done things in the opposite manner of many other producers, in that as you became more well-known and successful, your sound appeared to become (for want of a better phrase) more purist. Is this how you would describe your path?

Hmmm, I don't see myself as a purist. I have a knowledge of house, techno, rave, drum & bass etc going back a long way but I like to think I combine my influences rather than adhering to any of the existing templates of how techno should sound. There are people out there still serving up purist Millsian loops and Basic Channel dub-techno clones. It would bore me senseless to stick to one of these well worn formulas. A good example is my track 'Stoq' on Stroboscopic Artefacts; it pulls on dubstep, industrial and techno and (hopefully) creates something new. Maybe my sound has become more compatible with the established techno sounds of Berlin or Birmingham etc but I like to think I mix in enough unrelated elements to not be filed amongst the hardcore purists.

By shifting your sound, you may have risked alienating part of your existing fan base. Was that a concern to you at any stage?

I make music for myself first, if I am not feeling a track even if I think it has dance floor or sales potential then it will be scrapped. If I looked at my more successful tracks and churned out copies of those then I would be dead in the water in a matter of weeks. I have to be excited with what I make and I like to think people can hear that in my tracks. Whilst my sound and style does develop and shift there is still a clear Perc sound/aesthetic that has been about since day one. The spitting snares, the big kicks, the broken beat stuff, and the kinds of distortion I use. Some things are constant whatever I am making.

You have continued to release vinyl on Perc Trax, when a lot of people and labels around you moved primarily to digital. Can you give a background into how you first started collecting vinyl?

Strangely enough my first decks were cd decks; this was a long time ago when playing from cd was commonly seen as fake or cheating. Then when I got my first paid gig I rushed out and bought a pair of 1210's, giving me a month to learn how to play vinyl. My first purchases were looped up tribal and acid techno, which I found quite easy to mix and my collection has grown since then. Perc Trax carries on to do vinyl for a number of reasons, but if the day came when releasing vinyl was losing serious money then I'd have no problem stopping the 12's rather than risk the label as a whole. I love vinyl but I can see a vinyl-less future for techno at some point.

Can vinyl survive? Will younger djs somehow embrace it or are we looking at a future dj culture that will bear no resemblance to the original model?

It will survive for a number of years but I don't think it will be around forever. Younger djs are embracing it but I am not sure they are enough in number to replace people dropping out of the vinyl market. I laugh when I see a facebook post about a release that is coming out on vinyl and digitally, almost every comment is 'vinyl for me!' when most people posting will grab the release free from a blog and not even pay for the download. A lot of the 'vinyl forever' stuff is purely show, people trying to look like the real deal when they get most of their music for free from unauthorised sources.

Much of your recent material is industrial influenced. Is this the last area left in techno to truly experiment?

I think there has been an industrial element in techno since the very beginning. Even the old '88 acid tracks created with a drum machine and 303 shared an atonality that a lot of industrial music thrives on. I think it is an interesting area that still has space for innovation and exploration, certainly within the grey area where techno, industrial, drone and noise music meet. I think for the more forward thinking producers techno is just a vehicle to carry their experimental sounds to a wider audience via the established system of djs and dancefloors. Of course Techno has other areas to move into apart from the industrial thing, some of which will be blind alleys whilst others will open up whole new worlds of possibilities. Going back to what I said earlier about the established templates that a lot of techno follows, it would be a shame if what was once seen as future music becomes too focussed on replicating past glories.

Industrial is also a style of music that could claim to have been a type of active techno before 'techno' the term was first coined in Detroit. Would you agree?

Yes, it was/is machine music, focussed on texture and rhythm over melody and lyrical content. Whilst industrial music has always featured vocals, they are often treated as another instrument, equal to machine generated sounds and that is the same with all but the most commercially driven techno. Without studying old Mills/Wizard playlists I am sure industrial music was as much an influence on the early Detroit producers as Kraftwerk. Not just through the choices of sound used but also due to a shared approach to music-making and the (mis-)use of discarded machinery.

Is techno as an experimental art form, sometimes weighed down by the now defined sounds of influential cities like Berlin and Detroit, or is it important that techno has reference points like this?

The reference points are important, to use a cliché, it is just as important to know where you are from as where you are going, but people get too bogged down in these cities and their history. Techno has often been at is most innovative away from these major hubs. Perc Trax's Sawf is based in Athens, which has a tiny techno scene and his range of influences are truly his own, not those dictated by a select group of hyped clubs and record shops. People should remember that moving to one of these cities does not instantly make you a better DJ or producer. Often with the amount of competing creative types in the city such as Berlin your chances of making a name for yourself are reduced.

It's argued that the innovators of today are not the producers but the people developing forward thinking software and equipment for producers. What do you think about that, and how has technology helped you over the last five years for instance?

The software developers and hardware companies have a part to play but talented people will always find ways to adapt and use a piece of gear beyond what the designs intended. It is easier than ever to make functional dance music that will 'work' on most dancefloors. This does not mean you should be making it or that it has any lasting value. Using preset sounds and samples is an easy way to get a few digital releases but without some innovation and thought you will not go much further than that. Technology has helped me a lot, the switch from a fully hardware based studio to Ableton interfacing with a few choice pieces of kit gives me a flexibility that I could not have imagined before. For remixing the ability to creatively and accurately edit audio visually has been a massive change for me, so much better than staring at the screens of samplers and grooveboxes.

Your debut album is about to be released. For someone with your prolific output, it seems like an album could have come a long time ago. Presumably you were holding out to do something a bit more conceptual then, that is not just a collection of 12" club tracks?

I think the change in my sound has meant that an album is more viable for me than it was 3 or 4 years ago and now my drone/ambient tracks are getting good responses when before they were often overlooked in favour of my club tracks. One thing that really bugs me is when a producer waters down their sound to make an album more suitable for home listening. If people want an album to soundtrack their dinner parties then they will go for one from a producer with pedigree in that field, not a techno producer suddenly softening their sound. For me the classic techno albums are exactly that. Planetary Assault Systems on Peacefrog, the classic Joey Beltram albums on Tresor and Novamute, Vaporspace's debut on Plus8 etc. Yes, there are some drone/experimental tracks on my album but they are far from easy listening. If anything they present more of a challenge to the listener than the dancefloor tracks as the sounds don't have the tried and tested framework of a club track to cling on to.

What else can you tell us about the album?

Not a great deal right now. Roughly 10 tracks, more broken beat than 4/4. It is not a concept album but the title (to be revealed soon) focussed on two elements which run through all of the tracks. There will be one 12” released before the album and one after. The remixes for the first single are done and I'm blown away by who has remixed my tracks and what they have done with them. I know it is all very secretive at the moment but I don't want to say too much until the album is finished.

How important was it for you to release it on your own label? Did it bring an extra creative freedom that you might not have been afforded elsewhere?

For an EP I am happy to send 3 or 4 tracks to a label and if they only want two of them then that is fine, but for an album I need 100% control. To submit an album to a label which they then start picking apart would kill my passion for the album dead.

Finally, what's on the horizon for the rest of 2011?

The first half of 2011 is focussed on finishing and promoting the album. Aside from that a new collaboration between myself and an Italian producer is about to surface. The first fruits of that new project will be out at the end of March. Details of that will be made public very soon. Perc Trax has a full release schedule with albums from myself and Sawf plus EPs from Forward Strategy Group, Donor/Truss, Dead Sound & Videohead and Samuli Kemppi. From June or July onwards I have no real idea, a few festival appearances are confirmed and I guess I'll start recording tracks for some other labels once the album is in the can. I don't really know and that is what makes it exciting for me.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sYvwO5VJVbM/TWPwhkbcu3I/AAAAAAAAAH4/FXt3BWBjghg/s400/Perc_Trax_Logo_jpg%2BINVERSE.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5576565223119960946" />

Perc on Discogs.com
Perc on Facebook
Perc Trax homepage

Perc / Smear poster

Perc (live) + Smear in Dublin - Friday 25.2.11

This February we shift from old skool to nu-skool, for our return to The Underground at Kennedy’s. Over the last few years particularly, Perc has entered grittier and more experimental territory than his peers, treading some old paths but discovering many new routes. Last year’s ‘BCG’ track on his ever-industrious Perc Trax label, perfectly emphasised modern techno’s best bits – stark industrial atmosphere, cavernous dub backbone and added live sequences, demonstrating the type of invention often lacking in the genre today. With forthcoming releases on the likes of Sonic Groove, and a debut album on Perc Trax also ready to drop, we couldn’t think of a better time to have Perc come and play live in Dublin.

Before even hearing music by an artist called ‘Smear’, it seems safe to assume that he/she/it isn’t making funky house. With a steady stream of releases that goes back five years, Smear’s brutal yet atmospheric take on techno first came to most prominence via his involvement as one half of Forward Strategy Group (who incidentally have a new 12" on Perc Trax at the end of February). Further appearances on labels like Zooloft, MNX and Singularity, have made the Scottish man’s intentions clearly known. Without much fuss or showboating, Smear has earned many followers, not least through his killer dj sets at Leeds’ flagship techno night ‘Detached’.

Also appearing on the night is Giles Armstrong. As the brains behind ‘Electric City’ – one of the few groundbreaking Irish club nights of recent years - Giles has also played his part as one of the country's most relevant djs, with his services being in constant demand over the last ten years. Recently invigorated by the advancement in digital dj-ing technology, Giles has ditched his 1210s for a pair of Fader Foxes and Traktor, and unlike many DJs who made this type of move, Giles is most definitely on an upward trajectory. Back when underground classics like ‘Horsepower’ were leading the charge on MTV ad breaks, through to chart hits like ‘Sugar Is Sweeter’ and club anthems like ‘The Prophet’ raising his profile even further, CJ's run throughout the nineties was a rollercoaster of success. These days CJ is as busy as ever, involving himself in other projects outside of dance music, but still finding time to make it out and rock clubs like he always has. Ahead of his gig in Dublin this Friday, he took some time to answer a few questions for us...

So, how are things CJ? What's your routine nowadays, still spending most of your days in the studio?

Spending all days in the studio at the moment. I'm currently working with Belgian band dEUS on their new album "Keep you close". We're in the final stages of production which is exciting. I'm also collaborating with UK drum & bass duo 'Total Science'. Interesting to see how that will pan out. Then I'm gonna write some more techno (yeah really) and finish my new 'Magnus' album (my electropop collab with Tom Barman).

Can you trace a particular point in your career, where you felt a greater desire to work more outside of dance music?

There was no specific point in time, I just like broadening the spectrum whenever and however I can. I met some interesting people over the years from all genres and that mélange of flavours has kept me from stagnating.

A recent Slices documentary filmed you working in the studio with Jade 4 U. Will this be an ongoing working relationship?

It was fun to bump into Jade again and we certainly had a laugh in the studio. There aren't any immediate plans due to both our schedules but you never know.

It could be argued that there is (other than in trance) a distinct lack of lead female vocals in dance music today. Why is this in your opinion?

Most song based dance stuff is too cheesy to even discuss but there are always exceptions of course. Techno (as opposed to pop and rock) is about getting the most out of as few ingredients possible. One big cleverly engineered noise used to its full potential can release all the emotion a poetic lyric or a beautiful melody can. That's why most great techno is instrumental or at most has a little parlando hook.

How do you feel about R&S's relaunch and current stream of releases?

I haven't been paying that much attention to them at the moment as I'm full on in production but one thing that caught my eye was the new Model 500 release featuring Mike Banks, that was awesome.

R&S was well known for the quality of its in-house engineers and it is often unclear how much creative involvement some may have had in some of the records that went through the label’s studio. Can you give some insight into this?

R&S had an elaborate studio that you couldn't just walk in to and start tweaking. Marcos Salon, Cisco Fereirra, Robert Leiner, Per Martinsen and myself all spent a lot of time there so we knew the gear well. Nearly all other projects that were recorded in-house were engineered by one of us and our personal tastes and influences are very present.

How do you feel yours and others’ achievements have been recognised in Belgium itself? Have the media given you your full props over the years?

Ironically, at the time I felt my career was happening abroad and I got very little attention back home. Now, most Belgian media refer to my techno years in the superlative form without really knowing what it was all about.

When you finally got away from FFRR, you set up Mole Records. Which was the bigger challenge for you: working for a major label that had specific requirements, or running your own self-funded/directed label?

I like working with labels, majors and independents alike because they get things moving and give me the freedom to concentrate on the music. However when a label exerts creative control they become more of a burden than a help. So was the case with FFRR so I left and decided to run my own label. That wasn't the solution for me either though as I spent most of my time doing paperwork and answering emails and telephone calls and found there was no time left to write.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 265px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_yoslpinGeNc/TT7iOYBTqxI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/8L42ZQcgzmk/s400/CJBolland%2B2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566134926070491922" />

You always stood out in the techno scene for your willingness to embrace other emerging genres. Are there any more recently created genres or musical developments that excite you?

I'm open to anything that's got intent and character. There are way too many amateurs trying to make a quick buck milking the same elements over and over as a result any big tune soon becomes a so called new style and then overkill ruins it rapidly, but I still get an overwhelming sense of elation when I find that 1 big classy tune.

Doing more old skool sets these days, have you found yourself rediscovering many tunes that you had maybe left behind in the nineties?

Not rediscovering as I've always kept all my favourite music close by but getting to play them again and seeing crowds enjoy them is certainly fun.

When was the last time you played with Frank De Wulf?

That I quite honestly can't remember. Think it was back in the fifties :)

You've been coming to Ireland for many years. Do you remember your first gig here, and what one (s) stands out the most?

I can never remember the names of venues, I just remember all the fun people I've met in Ireland over the years and euhm, Guinness.

CJ Bolland Website
CJ Bolland on Discogs.com
CJ Bolland on Wikipedia

Bolland / De Wulf poster

CJ Bolland and Frank De Wulf in Dublin (28.1.11)

It has been a little while since our last gig and we were keen to come back with something special, so upcoming on Friday January 28th we welcome two legends of the scene to The Button Factory - CJ Bolland and Frank De Wulf - playing strictly old skool sets. As two people who laid the foundation of Europe’s exploding scene in the ‘90s, there are literally no better men to represent this period of time, when they get together to play many key tunes that define these essential years.

Besides being one of the producers of a generation – kicked off by a slew of outstanding releases on Ghent’s legendary R&S Records - English-born but Belgian based CJ Bolland was one of the pivotal figures in Europe’s rave and burgeoning techno scene from the early ‘90s. Working under various names like Ravesignal, Sonic Solution, The Project, Space Opera, and of course his own, CJ’s skills in the studio made him both an underground and overground superstar, while as a DJ he became one of the most widely renowned performers around. One of the few high profile names to regularly incorporate different styles into his sets, despite the growing sub-genre purism that seeped into the scene, CJ Bolland has played some of the best dj sets we have witnessed in Dublin over the years. Expect this performance to be no different, as he digs into his crates for a special selection of retro gems.

Frank De Wulf is an originator, a pioneer, a living legend. Making his name originally during the Belgian new beat era of the late ‘80s, De Wulf set the scene alight through classic tracks like ‘Acid Rock’ (as Rhythm Device) and most notably the ‘B-Sides’ series on Music Man - a collection of eps that displayed the unusual splicing of elements from well known records of the time, made into killer dj-friendly tracks. Casual fans will recognise much of De Wulf’s own music and remixes (The Orb, The Shamen, Jam & Spoon, N-Joi, Human Resource, Paul Hartnoll all benefited from De Wulf’s remixing talent) while hardcore fans will tell you of how their lives changed when they first heard Frank’s music or saw him play back in the day. After a long-term hiatus from the dance scene, Frank De Wulf is back, and back to play in Ireland for one night only!

Appearing on the night also is Pierce Rooney. Better known for his ongoing achievements as a dj/producer on the global hardhouse scene, Pierce leads a double life as one of Dublin’s old skool vinyl overlords. Pick a random label of the past - like for instance Network, R&S or Jumpin’ & Pumpin’ - and there’s a good chance that Pierce owns their whole catalogue; if there’s an ultra rare house track you heard on an old mixtape but never knew the name, there’s a good chance Pierce has double copies. Pierce is one of the true soldiers out there and we are delighted to have him warming up on the night.
-------------------------

Friday January 28th 2011
The Button Factory, Curved Street, Dublin 2

A Night of Strictly Old-Skool with:

CJ Bolland (R&S Records – Belgium)
Frank De Wulf (The B-Sides – Belgium)
+ Pierce Rooney

Doors: 11pm
Early bird tickets: €10 (until January 7th) at Event Elephant

CJ Bolland on Discogs.com
Frank De Wulf on Discogs.com
Pierce Rooney on Discogs.com

Cari Lekebusch Interview

Few would have thought that Stockholm, proud home to pop idols like Abba, would eventually become one of world's most productive bases for underground techno. Many early rave enthusiasts knew Sweden only for its euro-dance act Leila K; but in the background producers like The Source Experience (Robert Leiner) were bringing the standard of Swedish electronic music in a more serious direction via pioneering labels of the early nineties like R&S. Emerging at this time also, and soon orchestrating a Stockholm techno explosion through his advanced beatmaking and spaced out sound design, was a young Cari Lekebusch - a man who has since built up one of the largest and most impressive discographies in the history of the genre. Taking time out from unpacking boxes at his new home as well rewiring his studio setup, Cari kindly answered some questions for us in advance of his '90s techno themed set in Dublin this coming Sunday:

Where would you originally trace your interest or discovery of techno - Detroit, Chicago, the European sound?

C: My first WOW experiences were around 8 years of age, and mainly from electronic sound scapes. Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Ralph Lundsten but also James Brown for examples. This lead onwards through Breakdancing, and the sounds of Electro/Hip-Hop. Around that time I also started to experiment with creating my own tracks, that could be somewhat categorized into early Electro/Techno. And soon after started collect vinyl seriously, Chicago, New York, Detroit, European styles of House and Techno.

Can you describe the kind of influence Robert Leiner had on your early career?

C: Yes Robert was very handy with the machines; I always tried to listen carefully back then when I had the chances to be in the same studio as him. Back then it was much harder to get tutorial help and advice. Its not like having a nice chill afternoon with tea watching manuals and tutorials on YouTube :D

From your early releases, the Fred material perhaps stands out most. Would you agree? And what made you end the project in the end?

C: Yes you’re right the Fred projects are quite defined in sound and purpose. Lot of it is in Tim Taylor’s taste/pick of tracks, but towards the end of that story I started to create tracks with the Fred character in mind as well of course. The thing with pseudonyms kinda died out a bit in the 2000-2010. It doesn’t make that much sense trying to fight your way through the artist mega population jungle of today with 10 small scissors. Better have one huge very reliable well-made machete. CHOP! CHOP! like vegetables =D

Speaking of Freds, do you miss the presence of prominent guys from that time like Freddie Fresh in techno today?

C: Wow yes Freddie made some super Techno tracks, I still play some of them - and hey! Who knows - eventually cats come back to the house to drink some milk - if it tasted good that is :D

Whatever happened to Dan Zamani do you know? His discogs entries seem to end at the end of the nineties.

C: Ah yes Dan Zamani, well I’d love to be able to tell you something but I haven’t spoken to him since 1995 I think =S So I have no clue what so ever =/

Following the first era of trance and trance-influenced techno in Europe, next came the ‘Swedish sound’. Can you shed some light on what started it?

C : I still try to figure out what would define the "Swedish sound" LOL. My own productions used to vary a lot especially back in those days. I did an Electro track on the Sunday, Monday a Deep House track with Alexi Delano, Tuesday a Techno roller Drumcode with Adam Beyer, etc.

Many associate you solely with this hard, looped techno sound of the mid-late nineties. Is/was this frustrating considering the wide range of music you have actually made?

C: Yes I guess it’s all a matter of what tracks get the most attention, nowadays I’ve "learned" and I’m aiming towards a more balanced out type of sound in my releases. Focusing more towards one type of sound - at least for a MUCH longer time period. It’s no use trying to race ahead too much, since there are no witnesses to see you cross the finish line LOL

Running label operations from a young age, did you find that you had to learn about business very fast, and did you have much help from people around you?

C: Mostly learning the hard way sadly, I would have chosen many other routings if I had the knowledge of at least 10 years on the scene. I’ve had some much appreciated help from only a very few people, but in this case I don’t think its how many, but rather how much each "put into it" so to speak :)

You must have been annoyed when you had to change your label name from Hybrid to H-Productions. With more money, could you have won in court? Or was it like that?

C: I haven’t got the slightest clue about that. The only thing I wanted to do is continue making tracks, tons of records and tour non-stop. So changing to H-Productions from Hybrid Productions was easy. Gotta stay flexible, would be dreadful to realize your survival would depend upon a brand name o.O

Distributors are often either heroes or villains. What are/were Prime Distribution to you?

C: I would say both hero and villain in this case.

Running Sentinel appeared to be a good business move for you all in Sweden. Did it work out as you hoped it would?

C: Well Sentinel was a vinyl distributor only, and it was towards the "end" period of the vinyl market - when we realized it was not going to be much more vinyl for that long is when I started to take that company down.

What kinds of changes have taken place in your studio over the last, say, 5 years?

C: Hmmm good question. More inboard Computer software etc. I combine analog and digital nowadays and slowly start to find a good balance where I’m satisfied with what comes out. A bigger and badder sound card, and more attention to acoustics in the work room for better monitoring. But most of the changes have been taking place inside my head =D Which I think is where it’s at mainly, not in the studio gear. Needless to say though, it’s very important during the creation process.

Presumably some newer machines have taken over from much of your classic gear too. Any pieces of recent year equipment that you have found particularly useful or important?

C: I use a mix of digital and analog ... I still route lots of stuff through my outboard gear towards the end and during post production. New toys are usually always software based or some sort of controller unit :) I think I have to join a design team and build a machine or 2, because I usually only find 2 out of 20 functions interesting. Manufacturers of music machinery are usually always aiming for a large customer base, hence all the orthodox stuff in there slowing the evolution down for Techno producers especially.

With many still yearning the rawness of older techno, do you ever feel like revisiting or reworking any of the styles that you used to make?

C: Absolutely I do that now and then, but usually I rework them with today's tools and mind. Trying to make it sound exactly the same like it did back then would probably not be my first choice of studio session.

Have you thought of releasing more electro again?

C: Yes I will probably release some more Electro type of sounds in the future, I'm 99% sure of that =) It will probably be various types of Electro blended into an album project, and I would utilize full vocals on some tracks even.

You’ve recently converted a lot of your vinyl collection to digital. Did it take long?

C: I only digitalize tracks from vinyl whenever I need them. Doing that with the whole collection would be to much work yes :)

Does that mean that you’re ditching vinyl or just making yourself more adaptable?

C: Yes for me it's to stay in the main focus of the standards on the scene. Adapt myself to the use of new ways and technology. I still have my Technics turntables at home, but they just can't compete with using CD players in clubs and on events. No more mistakes, sub bass feedback, or jumping stylus so you get more bass to the people and don't have to stand totally still during your DJ set. I can sort my records better creating a more refined experience in arrangement and have a bigger range of tracks. Of course with CD & Digital you'll need to watch out so you get good quality files or you'll lose ALOT! Vinyl tends to "sound" better compared to many digital releases because of the mastering. People that master vinyl usually have quite significant knowledge of how to make stuff sound better that they did before :) Then of course there's a whole debate around the warmness, analogness of sound carriers, agents, vibrations, materials and take it to the moon and mars. BUT compare the situation between a perfect mastered track, put it on vinyl and on CD/DIGI, then compare its usability and sound in the club.

Finally, what is in store for Dublin when you play here on May 2nd?

C: I have a really good sound demonstration on my soundcloud page. Set is called Techno Archeology and is a pilot of a DJ mix CD project I will start later on in 2010.

Many thanks to Cari for his answers. Witness him rocking the walls of Andrew's Lane Theatre for his first Dublin appearance since The Kitchen in 2001!

Cari Lekebusch Myspace
Cari Lekebusch Website

Reeko

This Sunday’s gig sees the meeting of three techno giants, all headliners in their own right. Cari Lekebusch and Adam X’s records speak for themselves: releasing music through almost forty combined years at the helm, from the hedonistic rave days through to today’s Berghain influenced techno scene - of which Adam’s Traversable Wormhole releases are a defining symbol, and incidentally, where Cari is playing this Saturday in Berlin as a warm-up to Sunday in Dublin!

A man with far less of a head start, but with an equally revered production output is Juan Rico aka Reeko, who plays live on the night. Originally hailed as Spain’s young techno prodigy following a string of mind blowing early releases, Reeko has lived up to his early promise by building up a catalogue of superlative deep, dark and industrial dancefloor grooves, with the trademark swing of his beloved Roland 909 and shuffle of his killer rhythms. Reeko’s live sets have been the toast of practically all events and festivals he has played at in recent years. Unfortunately trying to track down some of these sets online is not particularly easy though. For now, we have selected some of our favourite tracks by Reeko to give you a flavour of what he is going to bring to the party on Sunday!

Other web links:
Reeko Discog
Reeko on Myspace text-align: center;">
After two cracking gigs in The Underground @ Kennedy’s, we’re moving things back up a level and back to the scene of our first show last October at Andrew’s Lane Theatre. This time we’ve booked three international guests, each one a true master of their craft…

Cari Lekebusch is the almighty king of Swedish techno. Treading a glorious path from the early ‘90s under names like Braincell, Mr Barth and Fred, and on labels like R&S, Harthouse, Missile and Planet Rhythm; by the time the mid nineties had arrived, so too had a powerful Swedish techno movement – spearheaded by Lekebusch and soon backed up by other new talent like Adam Beyer and Joel Mull. While recording on an endless amount of labels over the years, Cari’s mainstay has been his own H-Productions - home to an enormous body of pioneering work, both aural and visual. Cari will be treating us to a special 1990-97 style techno set, which takes in the golden years of techno’s explosion in Europe and some of the many tracks and hidden gems that he associates with this time. Like Planetary Assault Systems’ live set last year, this special set from Cari is another first in Ireland that we felt necessary to put right, and is going to be an historic experience for techno lovers in Dublin, as he lays it down proper on the ones and twos.

Adam X is one of New York’s last standing techno heroes – a man who ran the city’s legendary ‘Sonic Groove’ record shop with brother Frankie Bones and Heather Heart, and who still runs the label of the same name, a label which continues to stay true in today’s ever challenging market. In recent years Adam forged his sound into an EBM/industrial techno hybrid, which has recently morphed into the more stripped back style of his ‘Traversable Wormhole’ releases that are amongst the most essential of 2009/10. Currently a Berlin resident, Adam has been organising some of the city’s best one off parties at Club Maria, as well as regularly playing at other local meccas like Berghain and Tresor. Since his re-location to Germany Adam’s services have been in large demand around Europe both as a dj and live act; and during a colourful career that has included releases on labels like Peacefrog, Sativae, Drop Bass Network, Things To Come, MNX and many more, Adam finally comes to Dublin to lay down the law.

Spanish producer Reeko’s star first rose is 2003 when he dropped the fifth release on Grovskopa’s Emergence label – which became something of a modern classic through the dark, crunching broken beats that soon became his signature sound. While appearing on many labels, it has been his own Mental Disorder imprint that has been the backbone to his growing success and reputation. Also hosting marvels of the techno scene like Gennaro Le Fosse, MD has been at the forefront of an increasing Spanish label stronghold on the harder techno sound - lead by Reeko and countrymen like Oscar Mulero and Exium. A regular guest at events all over the world, Reeko is one of the few ‘next generation’ techno producers to have now positioned himself at the top of the ladder – and it is something he has done with considerable aplomb for a man still markedly younger than many of his peers. This is also Reeko’s debut Irish appearance, and it’s a live set sure to deliver fireworks.

Defekt (aka Matthew Flanagan) has been a tireless advocate of true electro over the last number of years, steadily honing his hardware based sound that has earned him a devoted domestic fanbase, and admirers all through the electro community including Monotone’s Larry McCormick aka Exzact, who features Defekt on an upcoming Bass Frequency Productions release. Also watch out for a double vinyl release on Takeover Recordings –which also promises some big, big remixes. Matt makes up one part of live improv electronic group ‘Push, Move, Click’ - whose eager abuse of drum boxes and modular synths is a breath of fresh air in today’s laptop dominated scene. Also appearing on the night, and opening up this special show, is talented upcoming dj Nathan Jones. Nathan has quickly been making a name for himself in Dublin, last year appearing at Electric Picnic as well as playing some great recent club gigs alongside names like Neil Landstrumm amongst others. Completing our list of performers for the show will be visuals extraordinaire Coolhandloop, who is developing some extra special suprises for the night.

Admission is €15. It marks the launch of Ed Devane’s debut album ‘Molten Membrane’, which we’re really charged up about! Ed is a supreme talent, and has appeared on a plethora of edgy bass-enthused labels like Touchin’ Bass, Spacebar Sentiments, !Kaboogie and Mantrap Recordings – the latter being home to this, his debut longplayer.

Joining Ed on stage for parts of his set will be Scurvy Lass, who has contributed to three of the tracks on the album, providing some of its most memorable moments. Also phattening up the lineup are Kachanski (live), Thatboytim, Eomac and Noid The Droid. Doors are at 10.30pm, admission is €10, and we’re also throwing in a free copy of the cd album (a month in advance of its full release!) for your troubles.

Micheal Forshaw/Mustard Gunn/Redmonk poster

Michael Forshaw & DJ Mustard Gunn in Dublin

After a memorable debut event at last October’s DEAF, we decided that we couldn’t just leave it there – and moving to the smaller, sweatier surroundings of The Underground @ Kennedy’s for our next gig, we welcome Michael Forshaw and DJ Mustard Gunn as our international guests on February 6th.

Michael Forshaw is a legend in his field. His label Chan ‘n’ Mikes has fashioned some of the craziest techno and electro of the last ten or so years - track and release titles like ‘I Love Horses’, ‘Cheerleaders’ or ‘Boyzone Make Me Wanna Smoke Crack’ have always demonstrated his humorous approach, but it’s the ruthless nature of his production that has set him apart. This is a long overdue return for Forshaw to play live in Dublin and a perfect way to kick off 2010 for us.

Making his Irish debut on the night is Coin Operated label head DJ Mustard Gunn. Coin Operated has been one of the best new labels of the last few years – showcasing a daring mix of UK bass styles from producers like Kanji Kinetic, 3d!t, Spaceface, The Squires Of Gothos and many others, with a friendly nod to the old skool. Mustard Gunn knows how to tear up the club and that’s exactly what he’s going to do when he gets here.

Completing the lineup is Redmonk, one of the craftiest DJs in the Dublin area,
as well as one of the masterminds behind the !Kaboogie collective, who have recently been pushing some sick new slabs of black plastic by some of the city’s best and most depraved producers.

Doors to The Underground @ Kennedy’s are at 10.30pm, with admission being a cool €10.
Ancient Methods Interview

Through four releases on their own self-named label since 2007, Ancient Methods have created a distinct take on the darker side of techno. Originally rumoured to be two more ‘famous’ producers working under this alias, such was the maturity and quality of their sound, it later emerged that it was in fact two underground DJs from Berlin, Baeks and Trias, who up to then were more well known for their long running residencies at Tresor Club. In advance of their debut Irish show at DEAF 2009, we got a chance to speak to them, in this their first interview:

How did you first become interested in electronic music?

Baeks: I heard an Acidhouse-tape from a friend in the late 80s and got infected. A local radio show and first party experiences in the early nineties gave the food.

Trias: With the first Berlin radio shows around 1991.

Did you ever dance on a float at Love Parade, honestly?!

B: No.

T: Yes, I participated, honestly. Until the middle of the 90s there was nothing wrong with the LP.

Who were the important DJs to you back then and why?

B: Saw some good DJs over the years, but the works of Surgeon and Regis impressed me the most, as they produced and played fine, strong, uncompromising and yet surprising Techno.

T: OK, of course they’ve been important to me too. I’d mention Pete/Rene from the Hardwax crew, who had a strong impact due to their mixing skills and musical knowledge, furthermore the former Tresor residents who had all their own very individual style but altogether delivered a wide range of valuable techno.

Was there much of goth/industrial scene in Berlin that you were aware of or part of?

B: No, I wasn't into that scene.

T: No. I’ve never seen myself as a part of that “scene”, sometimes I join some of the “industrial”-concerts/parties which take place here quite regularly. Due to the difficult club situation in Berlin some parties coming out of that scene had recently more proper techno to offer than some of the self-proclaimed techno-clubs, not to mention that the girls are way better dressed there. Adam X tried to set up some parties here, called “Crossing the Parallel” – the naming speaks for itself, in my opinion they have been the best parties in Berlin for a very long time and an appreciable attempt to merge the crowds.

You were resident DJs at Tresor Club until quite recently. For you, did the new club location ever feel as special as the original space?

B: The new Tresor is a special place too, but unfortunately too big which led to commercial demands that couldn't always be fulfilled. The old Tresor was in some way more comfortable and familiar.

T: I can only agree with that.

What kind of impact did regularly playing in a small, dark basement like Tresor’s bunker room make in developing the AM sound?

B: We guess you can hear that - we can't deny the impact of that place. If we had played only in small and cosy bars, the AM-Sound would probably be completely different and more slack.

T: Of course Tresor basement was the most important influence on AM. But the appearance of this special venue is just one small part of influences.

Is there a particular concept behind the name ‘Ancient Methods’?

B: It was born out of the situation - the minimal-hype was omnipresent when we launched the label. So AM should be an alternative draft to that
- with a wry smile of course.

T: Regarding the naming I wouldn’t say it was referring to a special musical aspect or meant as a counter-draft to a musical hype, nor was it a ‘concept’. But indeed it was contrary in a way to how many labels in the “techno/electronic” field try hard to emphasise the modern or even “futuristic” approach by use of naming, which in my opinion appears rather outdated. We thought the name would match to the label, as we thought that it’s rather necessary to sound powerful than modern or futuristic.

What was your inspiration to start the label? Were you reacting to the route the techno scene had taken in recent years?

B: We got bored by that minimal-hype and started making our own tracks in 2005. Two years later we were confident with the results and started the label.

T: The disappearance of techno music was an issue, but surely it was not the sole motivation for starting the label. But as mentioned before, AM never felt the demand to sound different.

Playing live is obviously a different challenge than playing a DJ set. Have you found it as fulfilling?

B: Playing live together requires more preparation than a dj-set, but also gives you new ideas how to improve the set and the sound in general.

T: After such a long period of DJing it was a significant turn. It’s fulfilling in a different way – on the one hand it is much more focused on a special sound, your own sound, you can’t react to a crowd with such a wide range of music like a DJ is able to. But on the other hand - if people like what you’re doing it’s much more fulfilling because it’s not the music of others they are celebrating with you.

Your sound has gained a wide range of fans; besides the quality of the music, has the variety of tempos on some of the records helped widen your fanbase do you think?

B: Maybe... I guess, most fans still come from the techno-field. We discovered that some sounds need space to deploy, so reducing the tempo just a little bit makes them more powerful.

T: Difficult to say – I don’t know. I wouldn’t regard tempo for decision if I like a record. And I guess if you play AM-tracks records on the intended RPM, they all have nearly the same tempo, ;)

Some UK producers cite native bands like Nurse With Wound or Throbbing Gristle as acts that created their interest in harsh or noise driven music. Did you hold a similar connection with any German bands?

B: Sorry, no.

T: Of course there have been influences by most diverse bands, also by German bands of course. As far as “noise driven music” is concerned, there has never been THE important band, who gave me the initial spark to discover the genre, neither a UK nor a German band. It was more a fluent passage of constantly discovering dark and experimental music.

How helpful has Hardwax and your association with them been to you?

B: They supported and encouraged us from the very beginning and we probably wouldn't be there where we are without them.

T: People assume you get more attention if you’re distributed by Hardwax, so you can’t deny that it has been helpful. I have great regard to Torsten (T++), who gave us a channel for distribution - at a time, when nobody else took any interest in our music.

Was their work ethic over the years, and of other Hardwax associated labels, influential to the aesthetic of Ancient Methods?

B: Hardwax's label-work over the years showed us, what is essential for a good record and we tried to realise that on our label too.

T: Sorry – I can’t re-iterate what Baeks is talking about, ;) For me there has been an important influence by Basic Channel and some of the Chain Reaction releases. But if you consider how many labels are more or less associated with Hardwax especially during the last years I think they are way too diverse to have a common aesthetic or even a general influence on AM.

Have you been happy with the overall reaction to the label, and are things more/less difficult than you thought it’d be to run a record label?

B: Yes, we didn't expect such good reactions on our music. To start a new label wasn't that difficult as we thought, but there are always new challenges in the whole production process and good old Murphy lurks around sometimes. But in the end we were confident with our releases.

T: I’m happy with the reaction. I wish we could spend more time on music – that’s the most difficult point.

Being based in Berlin makes it easier to collaborate with other established artists, like for instance Karl O’Connor. Are there many people you feel you could collaborate with?

B: There are a few artists we will collaborate with, so there are more things to come... watch out.

T: I guess being connected to the internet makes it much easier to collaborate with other artists than being based in Berlin. We’d love to push collaborations more forward but as I mentioned – there’s only so much leisure time for making music.

Has the current buzz surrounding your music tempted you to release a bigger quantity of material? What is your plan from here, will you continue to record primarily for your own label?

B: Well, as we both have a full time job, time is the most rare element, which prevents us from doing more - but we try to improve a little bit. Of course we set the priorities for our own label. This year we already contributed a track for RSB and releases on other labels are planned too.

T: I agree.

Have either of you ever thought of taking a career break or reducing your hours at work to put more time into the project? Is that kind of option unrealistic nowadays?

B: I tried it, but it wasn't possible at that time, maybe in the far future.

T: No. I guess the question if this is a realistic option mostly depends on the music you’re doing. Rubbish 90s techno seems not to be a promising business, which could feed two guys.

Do you see future generations in Germany continuing to support vinyl, and do you regard the scene over there for the physical product to still be healthy?

B: Hard to say now, as the market and scene are changing nowadays. We do small presses, but they sell constantly - vinyl still isn't dead...neither are we.

T: But Baeks, you have to consider: Maybe one day we are all dead. Maybe. I’m already too old to watch the future generations, so probably this is proof that we’re all going to die someday. But I hope that enough will ultimately be accomplished to convince future generations that a product is way better than an evil file.

<a onblur="try type='text'>Planetary Assault Systems & Ancient Methods in Dublin

Welcome to the Earwiggle blog. Our upcoming show takes place on bank holiday Sunday, October 25th, as part of DEAF 2009.

The night is headlined by Planetary Assault Systems, the legendary project of London producer Luke Slater. Having supplied some of the most truly outstanding music in techno history, PAS have marked 2009 with a new album 'Temporary Suspension' on Ostgut Ton, which has been one of the year's highlight releases. While Slater leaves behind him a trail of memorable sets in Dublin, this is the debut Irish performance of Planetary Assault Systems Live. Joined by current PAS member Christos Deligiannis, we anticipate this show to be fully worth the 15 year wait!

Also appearing on the bill and playing live are Berlin duo Ancient Methods - one of the most enigmatic new acts to have emerged over the last few years. Their sound is described in some quarters as 'pitch black techno war funk' and in just four releases (via their Ancient Methods label) they have established themselves as a shining light of today's scene.

The lineup also includes Dubliners Sunil Sharpe, Rory St John (Live) and Giles Armstrong. Tickets are priced at €18 from Spindizzy, Road and City Discs, which is inclusive of each shop's booking fee. Online tickets are €18, which are subject to a booking fee from Eventelephant.com and Tickets.ie. It takes place at Andrew's Lane Theatre, St Andrew's Lane, Dublin 2.
